By definition, meditation is a practice using a technique – such as mindfulness – to attain awareness, achieve mental clarity, and reach an emotionally calm and stable state. You may think that meditation is just for the mind, but it goes further than that. This practice has the ability to affect all body systems and one way to enhance it is with aromatherapy, also known as essential oils.

How to Use Essential Oils for Meditation

One of the best ways to use essential oils for meditation is by diffusion. Diffusers have a unique way of putting the best properties of an oil into the air, instantly cleansing and soothing your atmosphere. Depending on the kind you purchase, you can enhance the mood with colors and sounds.  Below are a few fun ideas for diffusers!

Another way to diffuse oils into the air is manually using a spray bottle of water mixed with a few drops of a chosen oil. Be sure to use a glass spray bottle to protect your oil and the bottle. It’s also a great idea to use pure or distilled water to cut back on mixing with any additives.  Also be sure not to spray on people or pets!

Topical application also works for setting the mood for meditation. Use one of the oils mentioned below, along with a carrier oil, and rub it in particular areas such as your third eye (in the middle of your forehead), the temple area (on the sides of your forehead), pulse points (on arms and/or legs), and on the back of your neck. Be sure to dilute as necessary and start with a small amount before increasing.

Last but not least, you can opt for applying a drop or two to the palm of your hand, rubbing both hands together, then inhaling the scent from your cupped hands. Take a few full deep breaths inhaling slowly through the nose, then exhaling slowly out of your mouth. You may also enjoy the fanning motion of cupped hands while taking a few deep breaths. Many oils need a carrier oil, however, so make sure to research your particular oil.

Best Essential Oils for Meditation

There are a variety of oils you can use to enhance your meditation experience. Some are single oils (not mixed) and others are known as blends (several oils mixed together). Each oil and oil blend has their own benefits all which have their own unique way of helping your body systems – especially related to relaxing, getting grounded, and creating connection.

Meditation Synergy

Meditation Synergy Blend: a mix of ylang ylang, patchouli, frankincense serrata, clary sage, orange sweet, and thyme. This blend is said to promote calm alertness and a calmer more meditative state of mind.

Chakra-Specific Synergy Blends:

  • Clear Intuition (Brow): Use this synergy to quiet the conscious mind and encourage introspection.
  • Grounded Foundation (Root): Use to help, soothe, calm and relax when you are feeling disconnected and distressed.
  • Higher Connection (Crown): Use this to consciously connect to higher wisdom, and transcend from living in the ordinary to a sense of the extraordinary.
  • Joyful Creation (Sacral): Use this synergy to help nurture inspired creativity, spontaneity, passion, and expansion in the birth of new concepts.
  • Loving Compassion (Heart): Use this to encourage a joyful outlook and outward connection, and promote unconditional love for self and others with compassion and acceptance.
  • Self Manifestation (Solar Plexus): Use this to invite positive, cleansing energy to support manifestation of your purpose, while encouraging warmth and graciousness toward others.
  • True Expression (Throat): Use this synergy to support clear communication in integrity with yourself and others.

Single Oils

Ho Wood: This oil is extremely high in calming linalool and is excellent for promoting a peaceful and relaxing environment.

Palo Santo: This is a sacred tree that is said to have been used for centuries for its healing properties and potential to ward off negative energy. Due to its powerful chemical makeup, this essential oil is well known for its healing, calming, and cleansing capabilities.
